Things to Do in Tapovan, Rishikesh: The Complete Local Guide (2026)
Yoga on the street where you stay, riverside cafés, evening Ganga Aarti, the new Bajrang Setu, the Beatles Ashram, rafting and Himalayan day trips. Here is everything worth doing in Tapovan and around it, written by the family that hosts guests here at Om Homestay.

The short answer
The best things to do in Tapovan, Rishikesh are: join a yoga or meditation class, eat your way through the cafés on the main street, walk to Laxman Jhula and the new Bajrang Setu, watch the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat, visit the Beatles Ashram, go rafting on the Ganga (in season), and take a sunrise day trip to Kunjapuri. Most of it is within 1 to 4 km of Om Homestay.
Where is Tapovan in Rishikesh?
Tapovan is a small, green neighbourhood on the west bank of the Ganga, a short distance from the Laxman Jhula area. The name means “forest of penance”, and for decades it has drawn people who come to Rishikesh to study yoga, meditate or simply slow down. Today the main street (many travellers call it Yoga Street) is lined with yoga studios, vegetarian cafés, bookshops, Ayurvedic shops and small guesthouses. Upper Tapovan, where Om Homestay sits, is quieter and greener than the main road.
Tapovan is not the old town of Rishikesh. It is calmer, more walkable and more focused on wellness than the busy market area near the main bus stand. If you want a quiet base with everything on foot, staying in Tapovan, Rishikesh is a good choice.

| From Om Homestay, Upper Tapovan | Distance |

Things to do on foot in Tapovan
1. Practise yoga where Rishikesh yoga began
Rishikesh calls itself the Yoga Capital of the World, and Tapovan is where most of the studios are. You will find drop-in Hatha and Ashtanga classes, pranayama (breathing) sessions, yoga nidra and sound healing, plus longer teacher-training courses. Class styles and levels vary a lot, so look at the timetable and teacher before you commit to a week.
Guests at Om Homestay can use our own yoga studio for free, and we can arrange guided yoga and meditation on request.

2. Start a morning with meditation and the river
Early mornings in Tapovan are the best of the day: temple bells, monkeys on the rooftops, and the Ganga running cold and green below. Many studios offer a sunrise meditation. Even without a class, a slow walk toward the river before 8 am shows you why people stay longer than planned.

3. Eat your way along the main street
Tapovan is a vegetarian-friendly area, and the cafés cater to travellers from everywhere. Expect fresh juices, smoothie bowls, thalis, wood-fired pizza, German-style bakes, Israeli and Tibetan dishes, and plenty of vegan options. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are generally not served in Rishikesh’s main yoga areas. For a local meal, ask for a simple North Indian thali or a plate of momos.
4. Browse the shops and bookstores
The streets of Tapovan are good for slow shopping: handmade jewellery, cotton clothes, singing bowls, incense, rudraksha malas, yoga mats, Ayurvedic oils and books on yoga, Vedanta and meditation. Bargain politely, and ask for the price of anything you are serious about before you walk in.
5. Take an Ayurvedic massage or wellness session
Several centres in Tapovan offer Ayurvedic massage, shirodhara and consultations with practitioners. Check the practitioner’s training and the oils used, and agree the price before you start.
6. Sit by the Ganga
Walk down to the river and sit for an hour. The Ganga here runs fast and cold from the Himalaya, so swim only at designated, supervised spots, and never alone. Most visitors simply watch the water, read or write in a journal.

7. Walk to Laxman Jhula and the new Bajrang Setu
Laxman Jhula, the 1929 suspension bridge that defined Rishikesh, has been closed to pedestrians since 2019 for safety reasons. Next to it, the Uttarakhand government built Bajrang Setu, a 132-metre cable bridge with glass-floor walkways, often called India’s first glass suspension bridge. As of mid-2026, reports say the central lane stays open to everyone free of charge, while a fee of about ₹100 for adults and ₹50 for children was announced for the glass walkways. Rules and fees can change, so check on the day.
Even without walking on the glass, the area around the bridge is worth a visit for the views, temples and riverside food stalls.
8. Visit Tera Manzil (Trimbakeshwar) Temple
The 13-storey temple beside Laxman Jhula is easy to spot. Each floor has a different shrine, and the upper floors give wide views of the river and the town. It is free to enter, but dress modestly and remove your shoes.
9. Walk to Neer Garh Waterfall
A short trail leads from the Laxman Jhula side through the forest to a series of small pools and waterfalls. It is a pleasant half-day trip and a good one for families. The trail can be slippery and the waterfall is usually closed or dangerous in heavy monsoon rain, so check conditions first.
10. Watch the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan
Every evening around sunset, priests and students at Parmarth Niketan, near Ram Jhula, perform the Ganga Aarti: lamps, hymns, chanting and a sea of people on the ghat. It is free. Arrive 30 to 40 minutes early for a good spot on the steps, and keep your phone and bag close in the crowd. Parmarth Niketan is about 2 km from Om Homestay.
11. Catch the Aarti at Triveni Ghat
Triveni Ghat, about 4 km away, has a larger, more local-feeling Aarti and is where many pilgrims take a dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati (symbolically). Sunset timings change with the season, so check the time with your host.
12. Visit the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia)
In 1968 the Beatles came here to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Today the ashram’s stone meditation huts and domes are covered in murals and graffiti, in a forest setting managed by the Forest Department inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. It is about 2.5 km from Om Homestay. Reported 2026 guides list entry at around ₹200 for Indian visitors and ₹1,200 for foreign visitors, with opening hours of roughly 10 am to 4 or 5 pm. Prices and hours change, so confirm before you go.
We also recommend the guided Beatles Ashram and Vashishta Cave tours by Rishikesh Day Tour, or our own walking tour.
13. Explore Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram
Ram Jhula (also called Shivananda Jhula) is the pedestrian bridge still open to the public. Cross it to reach Swarg Ashram, a lively riverside area with ashrams, temples, shops and snack stalls. It is busy and colourful, and a good place to walk, shop and buy sweets.
Day trips and adventure from Tapovan
14. Go white-water rafting on the Ganga
Rafting is the most popular adventure activity near Tapovan. Trips start upstream and finish near Laxman Jhula or Ram Jhula. Choose a short family stretch of about 9 to 16 km, or a longer 16 to 36 km run with bigger rapids. Rafting generally runs from roughly mid-September to mid-June, and is closed during the monsoon. Book with a licensed operator, make sure everyone gets a helmet and life jacket, and ask about the guide’s certification.
15. Catch sunrise at Kunjapuri Temple
Kunjapuri Devi Temple sits on a hilltop about 25 km from Rishikesh. A taxi up the winding road before dawn is the classic Himalayan sunrise day trip: on clear mornings you can see the Himalayan peaks, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Leave around 4:30 to 5 am.
16. Visit Neelkanth Mahadev Temple
This is one of the most visited Shiva temples in Uttarakhand, reached by a road through forest about 30 km from Rishikesh. Allow half a day. It gets very crowded during the Shravan month and festival days.
17. Explore Vashishta Cave
About 22 km from Om Homestay, on the road toward Shivpuri, Vashishta Cave is an ancient meditation cave associated with sage Vashishta. It sits on the bank of the Ganga and is peaceful in the morning. Combine it with a stop at a riverside beach or cafe.
18. Spend a day at Rajaji National Park or the Himalayan foothills
If you want wildlife and forest air, Rajaji National Park is within easy driving distance. For a quieter hill day, ask us about village walks and forest trails near Tapovan. Always go with a local guide or registered operator.
19. Cross the river by boat or ferry
With Laxman Jhula closed, small ferries have long connected the two banks near Laxman Jhula. Check with your host whether services are running and where they board.
